Akara is a robotics and artificial intelligence company based in The Digital Hub, Thomas street, Dublin, Ireland. We are a spin-out from the Robotics and Innovation Lab at Trinity College Dublin, and our mission is to reduce hospital infections and boost service capacity through the innovative use of robotics, infrastructure and AI technologies. We develop robotics and related technology from the ground up, encompassing mechanical and electrical design, fabrication, software development, system integration and support. The company is 5 years old and currently has 10 full time employees

About the Role

We are offering a 6 month (flexible) internship

The successful candidate will work closely with other engineers in the company including the Chief Robotics Officer on robotics and related projects. This will include the development of ML systems to operate on data from thermal cameras and integration of such models in an on-the-edge system including hardware acceleration. Multiple use cases will be explored and the infrastructure necessary to deploy such systems will be integrated.

The ideal candidate would:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate, master's, or PhD degree in Computer Science or Engineering, etc., or equivalent experience.

  • Strong understanding of statistical methods for data analysis and inference.

  • Understanding of algorithms and techniques for analysing and interpreting visual data (image & video) with expertise in object detection, tracking and state estimation.

  • Experience interfacing with cameras and other sensors.

  • Experience with one of the major deep learning frameworks

  • Strong DevOps, Linux and coding ability (Python) 

  • Have demonstrated track record of being proactive, driven and pleasant to work alongside

Additionally, the following would be desirable:

  • Experience with thermal imagery

  • Experience with CUDA and GPU programming

  • Experience in the area of Robotics

  • UI development experience

  • Knowledge of BLE, WiFi or other wireless protocols

  • Publication record of developing perception solutions

  • In their final year of study
