About Akara
Akara is a fast-growing international healthtech startup on a mission to build the intelligence layer for the modern hospital - using AI to help hospitals understand what is happening in real time and deliver more care with the resources they already have.
A spin-out from Trinity College Dublin, Akara builds on more than a decade of research in AI and robotics. Our technology is deployed across the US, Ireland, and the UK, and an Akara device was named one of TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2025.
With offices in Los Angeles and Dublin, we are scaling quickly and building an ambitious international team across AI, robotics, software, and healthcare.
About the role
We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer to design and build the interfaces, services, and infrastructure behind Akara's products.
This is a senior, broad-scope role. You'll work across the stack - user-facing frontend, backend services, cloud infrastructure, and edge deployment - and you'll be a technical anchor for the wider engineering team, helping others ship code reliably into live clinical environments. You'll report into the software leadership team and work closely with engineers across ML, infrastructure, and internal tooling.
This role is well suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership, solving practical problems, and working in a fast-moving environment where their contribution will have a visible impact.
What you will do
Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs supporting Akara's products.
Develop user-facing web applications and interfaces for real-time hospital data.
Build and maintain systems for moving data reliably between edge devices, cloud services, databases, and frontend applications.
Develop infrastructure for managing deployed devices, including configuration, software updates, monitoring, and model management.
Design and maintain scalable databases and data pipelines capable of supporting increasing deployment volumes and healthcare integrations.
Help develop integrations with hospital systems, including EHR platforms such as Epic.
Build and maintain cloud infrastructure and services, primarily within AWS.
Support the development of infrastructure for Akara's AI agent architecture.
Improve how we deploy, monitor, test, and operate software across cloud and edge environments.
Build internal tools that allow our AI and operations teams to inspect, manage, and work with data more efficiently.
Contribute to containerisation, CI/CD, code review, testing, observability, and engineering standards.
Work closely with engineers across AI, robotics, computer vision, and product to move new capabilities from prototype to production.
Review code and help improve engineering quality across the team.
Use data and customer feedback to inform decisions.
Identify risks, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement.
Communicate progress, priorities, and results clearly.
Contribute to the broader development and growth of Akara.
What success looks like in the first 12 months, you will:
Have shipped and be operating production features across frontend, backend, and cloud infrastructure in live clinical deployments.
Be a trusted reviewer and technical resource for other engineers moving code to deployment.
Have strengthened Akara's deployment, CI/CD, and ML devops practices in ways the rest of the team can see and rely on.
What we are looking for
Significant industry experience as a professional software engineer (excluding internships and not purely academic or research background).
Strong professional experience across the full stack, with proficiency in Python, React, and Node.js.
Proven experience designing and building production, backend services, APIs, and databases.
Experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS.
Experience with containerised deployments.
Good understanding of software architecture, testing, code review, and deployment practices.
Comfortable working close to hardware/edge constraints on-device model management, edge processing, or similar.
Strong system design judgement - able to make and defend architectural trade-offs, not just implement a spec.
Ability to work independently in a fast-moving startup environment, and to support and unblock other engineers.
Eligibility to work in Ireland without requiring visa sponsorship.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Helpful, but not essential
You do not need experience in all of these areas, but experience with any of the following would be valuable:
Building real-time or event-driven systems.
Edge computing or software running on connected devices.
Device fleet management, remote configuration, or over-the-air software updates.
MLOps or deploying and managing machine-learning models in production.
AWS services and infrastructure-as-code.
Building scalable data pipelines and database infrastructure.
Healthcare software or EHR integrations, particularly Epic.
HL7 or FHIR.
AI agents, LLM infrastructure, or orchestration systems.
Monitoring, observability, and production operations.
CI/CD and developer tooling.
Working in a startup or other environment where engineers take broad ownership.
Experience taking R&D prototypes through to reliable production systems.
